I asked if I could buy Indy<\/a> an Apple Watch. That\u2019s when everything fell apart.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Willie was sick<\/a> last week. I should know by now if Willie is sick, I need to pick up the slack. I really thought I was picking up the slack.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I was wrong.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I checked in on Willie and Indy the day after the debacle at the lab. First, I inquired after Willie\u2019s well-being.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not good!\u201d she said, which sounds alarming but really isn\u2019t. Willie being \u201cnot good\u201d covers everything from Alexa’s<\/a> disrespect to a bad episode of the \u201cToday\u201d show to accidental dismemberment. I\u2019m always fascinated to hear which direction \u201cI\u2019m not good!\u201d takes me.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Willie was concerned because she could breathe. Not because she couldn\u2019t breathe. Because she could<\/em> breathe.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Historically, when Willie\u2019s asthma acts up, her steroids take several days to ease her breathing. Last week, her breathing had eased almost as soon as she started her medication regimen. The abrupt improvement left Willie convinced she had a blood clot in her lungs.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Now, Willie has good reason to be concerned with blood clots. Since her near-death experience<\/a> five years ago, Willie has been known to cultivate the occasional blood clot.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The thing is, blood clots in your lungs don\u2019t impair your breathing then randomly get better, even with steroids.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I reminded Willie of blood clot pathology. If she\u2019s better, it\u2019s almost certainly an asthma exacerbation responding to the steroids.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s pneumonia!\u201d she replied.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

She\u2019s started planning her funeral. Indy\u2019s too.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I moved onto Indy. For the last few days, Indy had been feeling better. Had this trend continued?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Although Indy was still feeling better, Willie was frustrated because he\u2019d missed a dose of his medications the day before. This is problematic in Parkinson\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Willie usually reminds him. But Willie had been busy caring for herself.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Alexa is also supposed to remind Indy. I\u2019m pretty sure she kept quiet out of some sort of SkyNet assassination attempt.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The worst part of this equation is me. It was medication time when I sat Indy down to eat lunch after our lab adventure. I was too busy with Terminator<\/em> analogies to consider Indy\u2019s meds.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

If Indy\u2019s three layers of protection are all going to fail him, we need a fourth layer.<\/p>\n

I mean, look at what a good dad and husband Indy is in this picture. Oh. Is Willie in it too? I hadn\u2019t noticed\u2026.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

I researched automated medication dispensers a few months ago. For various reasons, they didn\u2019t suit our needs.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But\u2026.an Apple Watch. I could supervise Indy from my phone. The heart rate monitor sends an alert in the event of abnormal rates or rhythms. A fall alert system automatically calls emergency services.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Even better, there’s a Parkinson’s disease app. Not only can you track your symptoms, you can also schedule medication alerts.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Perfect.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I floated the idea past Willie. While it was a good one, Willie acknowledged, the problem is Indy. He hasn\u2019t worn a watch in years.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Well, Indy didn\u2019t wear a wedding ring until he retired. This was one hurdle I was confident I could overcome.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Loading up my computer and my daughter, I headed to Willie and Indy\u2019s for a masked and socially distanced discussion of our options.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Willie agreed the Apple Watch fit the bill. And not just for Indy. She wants one too.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And that\u2019s when her gaze settled on Indy. Indy. Who wasn\u2019t wearing a mask.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Willie demanded to know why Indy wasn\u2019t wearing a mask.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I pointed out if we were all wearing masks, Indy could go without.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Willie observed I would never have offered her the same defense. And she’s right. Because Indy is my favorite person ever and has never done anything wrong his whole life and I will fight anyone who says anything to the contrary. To the death.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Willie is pretty cool too. But wrong basically all the time.<\/p>\n

My daughter, who is saving for her own Apple Watch, piped up. Her wristband is going to be rainbow. She\u2019d like Indy\u2019s wristband to be rainbow as well.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Indy laughed. He took a slow breath and quietly began, \u201cI think I know what you\u2019re trying to do\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Willie interjected. She had a few more things to say about the Apple Watch.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Indy began again.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Willie interjected again.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Indy began again.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Yeah. Willie interjected again.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

How often do you think Indy is doing exactly this behind Willie\u2019s back?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

We finally got around to Indy. He liked the idea, and committed to wearing the Apple Watch. He used to wear a watch, back when he was a bus driver. But he lost it and that was the end of that.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

For a minute, I thought Indy might ask me to find it. He had, after all, asked me to try to find out why his brother had a tracheostomy as a teen back in the 1940s.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But that\u2019s not what was on Indy\u2019s mind. Indy still has his father\u2019s watch. It just needs a battery. Was there anything I could do with his dad\u2019s watch vis a vis the Apple Watch?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Sure, I said. Get me the watch. I\u2019ll see what I can do.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Willie slapped the table. \u201cI don\u2019t believe this!\u201d she exclaimed. I can\u2019t turn my grandfather\u2019s watch into an Apple Watch, something Willie knows, and something Willie knows I know too. I would have given her an exasperated, sarcastic explanation of the improbability of such a request, had she made it.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Yep.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cHey Alexa,\u201d I said. \u201cDo you like Willie?\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know who that is,\u201d said Alexa. Which might be good for Willie. SkyNet can\u2019t get her if SkyNet thinks she doesn\u2019t exist.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Today, I called Willie. I know she and Indy have several appointments. There are bad storms forecast for the afternoon. I wanted to make sure she and Indy would be done their appointments before the rain arrived.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Willie assured me everything was scheduled for the morning. We hung up. I planned my day.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Two hours later, Indy called to let me know he was home, as Willie had instructed him to do. But he\u2019s headed back out.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This afternoon.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Things might be too far gone. Even for an Apple Watch.<\/p>\n
