Willie and Indy<\/a> are selling some property.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Indy fancied himself a land baron<\/a> back in the 60s. By the time he married Willie, he owned three properties, which Willie only discovered once the tax bills began arriving.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

After their wedding day.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But now, Willie and Indy are looking forward. They realize they have more days behind them than ahead.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Which, incidentally, could also be said of me. Because Willie and Indy most definitely have shaved years from my life.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Willie and Indy want their deaths to be as straightforward as possible for me, their executor.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

If only they\u2019d treat their lives the same way. I could maybe get back a few of those years I\u2019ve lost to false alarm emergency room visits<\/a> and false alarm middle-of-the-night phone calls<\/a>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

To simplify their deaths, Willie and Indy have decided to unload the properties they still own. One is in Maryland<\/a>, the other El Paso.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Well, getting Willie to sell the El Paso land took some effort.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cSell it!\u201d Indy said, which is great. Technically, I only need his approval. Neither piece of land is in Willie\u2019s name. Just Indy\u2019s. I think that was his version of a prenuptial agreement because Willie is obviously a gold digger.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t have to sell it,\u201d Willie admonished. \u201cThe taxes are so low!\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I reminded Willie they were selling the properties to make my life easier. But Willie is no fan of making my life easier.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s fine,\u201d Willie assured me.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

So I reminded her of her brother, who spent the last few years of his life penniless in a nursing home. He died thirteen months ago. As executor, Willie is still dealing with his estate.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And, of course, driving around with his ashes<\/a> in the trunk of her car.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I reminded Willie that her brother didn\u2019t even an estate, but his death managed to give her a year\u2019s worth of work. Indy has three estates. I\u2019m bad at math, so I\u2019m not sure how a ratio of zero estates to one year of work translates for three estates. But I know it\u2019s a lot.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

With an exasperated sigh, Willie agreed to off the El Paso land.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Willie retrieved her file on the Maryland property. \u201cI don\u2019t even have<\/em> a file on the El Paso land,\u201d Willie said, like the El Paso land was a child unworthy of her consideration.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I feel you, El Paso.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Sorting through her Maryland paperwork, Willie noticed she had no tax payment receipts after 2019.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

That was the year Willie and Indy moved. Meaning it\u2019s entirely possible the bills are still going to their old house, the land had been repossessed, and this conversation had sucked down an hour of my life I could have devoted to The Falcon & The Winter Soldier<\/em>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But I didn\u2019t and then I saw a spoiler, so I knew how The Falcon & The Winter Soldier<\/em> ended before I watched the final episode. All because Indy bought some land in 1962.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I went to the town website for the Maryland property to find Indy and Willie\u2019s tax records.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Paid in full, and the municipality has Willie and Indy\u2019s current address.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I can promise you it was the “free” part that Indy couldn’t walk away from.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

With that property in the clear, I turned to El Paso. In the Maryland file, Willie found a letter. With a flourish, she laid it before me.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cHa! I do<\/em> have paperwork on the El Paso property!\u201d She proclaimed, triumphant at her organizational skills.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWillie,\u201d I sighed, \u201cthis isn\u2019t about El Paso. It\u2019s for the Maryland property.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Willie said. \u201cIt says Texas.\u201d She nodded knowingly.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Not so much. The letter was from a Texas real estate agent, offering to sell and even buy the Maryland property.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

So call me maybe…<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

Willie dismissed my arrogance, producing another piece of paper.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unfolding it, I saw that it was a map of the El Paso neighborhood hosting Indy\u2019s plot.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Relieved that I had something to go on with the El Paso land, I set about looking it up online. But El Paso, Texas had no record of Indy being a landholder.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s El Paso, right, Indy?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cOh yeah,\u201d Indy assured me.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The development is called Sunland Estates. I Googled it.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Well, it sounds pretty…<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

And that\u2019s how I learned Indy\u2019s property was sold as a scam and is now a potential nuclear waste disposal site.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It\u2019s also how I learned that I am undoing yet another scam<\/a> involving Willie and Indy. A scam that began decades before I was born.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I appreciate Willie and Indy\u2019s attempts at making things come full circle.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Except not really.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The first thing that popped up in my Google search was this<\/a> article, which explains how back in the 60s, a real estate company sold plots of land in eastern El Paso, knowing full well these plots were not ready to be built upon \u2013 they lacked sewers, water, other basic utilities.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This is no longer legal to do in Texas. But now, large swaths of eastern El Paso sit unused, the owners lost to the sands of time, if not to the sands of El Paso itself.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Land here is difficult to develop due to so many delinquent and dead owners, and difficult to sell for the same reason. No one wants to buy a single plot when there\u2019s no water and miles of nothingness.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Indy\u2019s land is in Hudspeth County<\/a>. That\u2019s eastern El Paso, the setting for the scam in this article. The real estate company basically fleeced him into purchasing a property no one intended to develop.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Because of the difficulties with construction on that land, the idea has been floated to use the area for nuclear waste. But all of Hudspeth County\u2019s 3211 people \u2013 as of 2014 \u2013 are against their backyards hosting depleted uranium.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

My sleuthing also uncovered Indy\u2019s tax records, which \u2013 like the Maryland property \u2013 showed Indy\u2019s current address and taxes paid in full.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Willie was indignant when I announced this. \u201cNotice she gives me no credit for updating our address and paying the taxes,\u201d she whispered to Indy.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The \u201cshe\u201d here would be me. I was supposed to be impressed that Willie and Indy had, you know, not committed tax evasion.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Willie\u2019s brother \u2013 the one in the trunk of her car – committed tax evasion. It\u2019s a long story.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Anyway, whispering was pointless. For starters, Willie, Indy, and I were sitting at a three-foot square table. Also, Indy is hard of hearing and refuses to wear the hearing aids it took me four phone calls and two visits to the VA clinic to procure, not to mention the nine months of paperwork I completed to make sure the VA gave Indy those hearing aids for free.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But Indy is the best. So I let that go. Sort of.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cI can hear you,\u201d I told Willie. \u201cIndy can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d Willie asked.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Indy laughed.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not giving you credit for paying your taxes and notifying the government that you moved,\u201d I told Willie. \u201cYou\u2019re supposed to do those things, you know.\u201d Which I know she doesn\u2019t know because when she was sick<\/a>, I was paying the bills and discovered the tax bill for both properties was six months overdue.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I rattled off the tax information I had found online for each property. When I got done, Willie began sorting through the Maryland folder\u2019s paperwork. \u201cWhere are they?\u201d she muttered.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWhere\u2019s what?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

“My tax-paid receipts,” Willie said. “I want you to have them for the real estate agent.”<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWillie,\u201d I said, \u201cI just explained that I have all the tax receipts here online. There\u2019s this new thing called the internet\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Willie was not amused.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cYou know,\u201d she said, \u201cI may not be tech-savvy compared to you kids,\u201d \u2013 which means me and my siblings, all far from being kids \u2013 \u201cbut around here I am a god<\/em> when it comes to tech.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Last year she went on a tirade about Uber not having a phone number. I\u2019m just going to say that and let you ponder what, exactly, constitutes a tech god in the retirement village.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Sorting through the paperwork at home, I found the original bill of sale. It\u2019s made out to Indy, Senior.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This was sixteen years before my brother was born. And while he\u2019s an Indy, he\u2019s not an Indy, Junior. They have different middle names.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

So Indy\u2019s deed of sale begs a question.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

If he was Indy, Senior in 1960, who was Indy, Junior?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And would he like to buy some land?<\/p>\n
