Indy<\/a> has a hairline fracture of his toe.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He woke up one day last week, unable to walk without limping. He hobbled around the Temple of Doom<\/a> for three hours before finally telling Willie.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This is pretty typical<\/a> behavior for Indy, keeping his cards close to his chest like that. He had Parkinson’s<\/a> symptoms for well over a decade before he told anyone. And he kept mum for about six hours before telling anyone about the bank drive-through he took down with his service truck.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

So now that I\u2019m thinking about it, three hours is record-setting for Indy.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And no. Willie didn\u2019t notice Indy was hobbling. He probably wasn\u2019t getting her tea right. Improperly prepared tea is all that Willie would notice.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Take it easy there, guy.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

After a day or so of rest, ice, compression, and elevation, Indy\u2019s foot still hurt. That\u2019s when we had Indy\u2019s foot X-rayed.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cHow did you fracture your toe?\u201d I asked Indy. He\u2019d already denied any injuries \u2013 he didn\u2019t drop anything on it, he didn\u2019t stub it on a chair.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d Indy said. Which is what Indy says to every health question ever posed to him.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I suspect he incurred the injury exercising. Or it\u2019s a stress fracture from osteoporosis.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I voiced my theories to Willie.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWell, I was screened for osteoporosis a few years ago and they said I was fine,\u201d Willie said in response.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cAmazing that your lack of osteoporosis didn\u2019t protect Indy from a fracture, Willie,\u201d I sighed, rolling my eyes as Indy laughed. I might re-christen her Moira Rose<\/a>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

So now Indy is in a boot for four to six weeks. I expressed concern that Indy\u2019s boot overlaps with the Cape May vacation he and Willie planned with my aunt, uncle, and cousin. It may not be wise to take Indy, already unsteady, to less familiar terrain in a boot.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cPah,\u201d Willie said. \u201cHe\u2019ll be fine.\u201d Which is what she said when his hand began to shake.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

That turned out to be Parkinson\u2019s.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

She also said Indy would be fine when the cross-country train they were on in 2019 crashed. The staff tried to evacuate Willie and Indy for the duration of the train\u2019s repairs. \u201cPah,\u201d Willie told the staff. \u201cWe\u2019ll be fine right here,\u201d she huffed.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Indy passed out.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I asked later why they didn\u2019t just leave the train. \u201cThey wanted us to jump<\/em> from the train,\u201d Willie said. \u201cI don\u2019t jump<\/em>.\u201d Although Indy, 81 at the time, suffering from Parkinson\u2019s and having just passed out, jumped from the train.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I\u2019m not sure if my line here is, \u201cOnce a Marine, always a Marine,\u201d or \u201cIf I was trapped on a crashed train car with Willie, I\u2019d jump too.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Now, when Indy had a totally benign irregular heartbeat<\/a>, Willie insisted he wouldn\u2019t be fine. He\u2019s had five months of cardiac evaluations, including a stress test.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWhy is he getting a stress test?\u201d Willie asked, forgetting<\/a> all about Indy\u2019s January hospitalization. \u201cNobody worries about my<\/em> heart,\u201d she grumbled.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cYou do realize,\u201d I said, \u201cthat the cardiologist wasn\u2019t going through charts seeing who needed a stress test. He didn\u2019t say \u2018Oh I really like Indy, Indy needs a stress test, but to hell with Willie.\u2019 If you\u2019re going to insist Indy go to the hospital to get his heart checked, they will, in fact, check his heart.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWhen did he go to the hospital?!\u201d Willie exclaimed, having forgotten all about the night Indy and I sat in the emergency room for eight hours<\/a>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Which made me seriously reconsider my Willie\/Indy sick day policies. If they\u2019re not going to remember trips to the hospital, and get annoyed at the follow-up testing, do I really need to take them to the emergency room every other month? Can I just pop them in the car and take them to McDonald\u2019s? Can I just tell <\/em>them we went to the hospital?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I\u2019ve added Indy\u2019s boot to the checklist of things I run through when I check in at the Temple of Doom. Indy\u2019s Parkinson\u2019s symptoms, Indy\u2019s blood pressure. Is he taking his meds? Is he using his sleep apnea machine?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cOh ask him how he uses his sleep apnea machine, because I don\u2019t know!\u201d Willie cried.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Apparently, Indy goes to bed before Willie. When Willie retires, Indy is asleep. No sleep apnea machine.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When Willie wakes up in the middle of the night, the sleep apnea machine is on. When she wakes up in the morning, it\u2019s off.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWhen does he get up to put it on? When does he take it off?\u201d Willie cried. \u201cYou\u2019d think I\u2019d notice!\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Well, tell that to Indy\u2019s foot.<\/p>\n
