\u201cOh, I love it when you come home from your parents\u2019 with pills,\u201d Don said, eyeing the prescription bottles on the dining room table. \u201cIt means there\u2019s a story.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

There\u2019s a story.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Indy’s<\/a> Parkinson\u2019s diagnosis<\/a> added several new medications to his day. That\u2019s hard for Indy. Before the Parkinson\u2019s, Indy took three prescription drugs \u2013 two in the morning, one at bedtime.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Parkinson\u2019s diagnosis tacked on three medications to his morning and two to his evening. It also meant Indy needed pills at lunch and another round in the late afternoon.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Well, it was supposed to go that way. It didn\u2019t. But we\u2019ll get to that.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Even worse, one of Indy\u2019s Parkinson\u2019s medications required him to take two-and-a-half tablets three times a day to get his required milligram dosage.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Complicating things even further was Indy\u2019s October hospitalization<\/a>. His doctors suspended the pill he takes in the morning and late afternoon. It\u2019s meant to increase his blood pressure so he doesn\u2019t get dizzy.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He tends to do that when he stands up. His blood pressure drops, then he drops.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The medication was working a little too well, thanks to the infection Indy had at the time. His blood pressure was astronomical. We were told to hold the medication and to periodically check Indy\u2019s blood pressure. A low blood pressure was fine as long as Indy wasn\u2019t dizzy.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Willie dutifully and periodically checked Indy\u2019s blood pressure once he was home.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Well, dutifully after I reminded her.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Indy\u2019s blood pressure would be low. Not a good low. A significant low. But he never got dizzy.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Remember – low is fine. Dizzy is not fine.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Willie, however, is a retired cardiac nurse. When you\u2019re an old cardiac nurse, low is always bad. Low needs to be fixed. So even though Indy\u2019s doctors said to hold the medication as long as Indy wasn\u2019t dizzy, Willie wanted to give Indy the medication.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Not to make Indy feel better. To make Willie <\/em>feel better.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Because that\u2019s how practicing medicine usually works.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I knew Willie would want to give Indy that medication. I knew Willie would never remember Indy had gone to the hospital with blood in his urine but needlessly became a stroke workup. I knew the fact that Indy was not symptomatic would mean nothing to Willie.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

So the day the doctors stopped Indy\u2019s medication, I took it from the Temple of Doom. I was like June Carter taking all the pills from Johnny Cash\u2019s house. I was Karen Hill, dumping drugs into my purse instead of the toilet. I was Andrew McCarthy, cramming RDJ into my convertible to whisk away to some drug-free Ivy League school.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Remember the cough syrup<\/a>? Remember when Indy and Willie became Sid and Nancy? Remember when they were doing shots of prescription cough syrup like teenagers at a frat party?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I do. Everyday.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Willie called me one day to say she couldn\u2019t stand to see Indy\u2019s pressure so low, even though he felt fine. She wanted to give him that pill but couldn\u2019t find any. \u201cI thought I still had some left over,\u201d Willie told me. \u201cI guess I don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Willie is just the worst drug dealer.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t remind Willie that I had the medication. I did remind her how dangerous giving Indy a pill just to satisfy Willie could be.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Willie agreed. Reluctantly. Because Willie is not good at refraining from doing things that Willie wants to do. The consequences are, to Willie, inconsequential. Largely because she always makes those consequences someone else\u2019s problem.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Hi. Someone Else here. Nice to meet you.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Had to quit my day job…<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

Almost a year later, Indy is still off that medication. That\u2019s just an indication of how far-reaching one urinary tract infection can be in an octogenarian suffering from Parkinson\u2019s.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And speaking of that Parkinson\u2019s, Indy had an appointment with his Parkinson\u2019s neurologist a few weeks ago. She was excited to tell us that Indy\u2019s one medication – the one that is two-and-a-half pills three times a day \u2013 now comes in a formulation that would make it one pill three times a day. Would we want that formulation?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cYes!\u201d Willie exclaimed immediately. She is the chief pill cutter and dispenser. Less pills to cut made her day.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But when the pills arrived a week later, Willie was furious.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

With me.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But I’m an angel!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

I sauntered into the Temple of Doom, dropping into a seat at the dining room table. Indy and I chatted as I set up my laptop for his telehealth speech appointment.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I refuse to use Willie\u2019s laptop. It\u2019s slow. And has some kind of large print thing going on. And it\u2019s sticky.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Probably from cough syrup.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Abruptly, Willie stalked over to me with a handful of pill bottles. She slammed the bottles down in front of me.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The new bottle Willie had been so enthusiastic for now had her incensed. And \u2013 as with all things in Willie\u2019s world \u2013 I was to blame.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The problem? Even though this formulation was an easier one pill than two-and-a-half, it was still three times a day.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Willie loves to tell me how \u201call the research\u201d shows people are more compliant with medication if it\u2019s given less times per day. Indy\u2019s three-times-a-day medication regimen is a burden. Sometimes, he and Willie forget a dose. If \u201cthey\u201d can make this medication from two-and-a-half pills into one, why can\u2019t \u201cthey\u2019 make it less times per day?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Just to be clear, when Wille says \u201cthey\u201d, she means me. She means why can\u2019t I<\/em> make Indy\u2019s pills less times per day.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Skating through life while I make Willie work.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

I can\u2019t tell you how many times we\u2019ve had this conversation. This isn\u2019t an antibiotic or blood pressure medication with loads of options to choose from. Parkinson\u2019s has one drug. One.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

That one drug usually has to be given three times a day.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I\u2019m pretty great, but I can\u2019t change the pharmacology of a pill. Or the nature of a disease.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What can I say? Maybe next time you don’t trust someone in jorts.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

I took a deep breath to quell my frustration as I launched into the explanation. Again.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I was about two sentences in when Willie cut me off.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t condescend to me!\u201d Willie snarled. \u201cI\u2019m a nurse too!\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Yikes.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Well, you guys know I wasn\u2019t being condescending. When you\u2019ve had a discussion multiple times, when you\u2019ve been blamed for things that could not possibly be your fault, when you know this dynamic will play out again and again, it\u2019s hard to keep your frustration from slipping into your voice. Your face. Your body.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It’s also hard to not want some sharesies on that cough syrup.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

So I told Willie that.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Well, not the cough syrup part.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I also called her out. Indy, too, which was hard since he\u2019s so awesome. But Willie and Indy, three years into Indy\u2019s Parkinson\u2019s diagnosis, have not reckoned with it. They act like it\u2019s a bad flu \u2013 find the right combination of treatments and we\u2019ll banish it forever.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

There is no combination. There will be no banishment. We\u2019re not talking Napoleon here. We\u2019re talking Putin. It\u2019s pretty much a permanent situation.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Parkinson\u2019s is chronic and progressive. I told Willie and Indy their days of Indy taking three pills twice a day are over. For the rest of Indy\u2019s life, his medications will only become more complex.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It took me so much Starbucks to recover from that conversation.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cFine!\u201d Willie grunted.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I was already in trouble so I decided to go for broke. I told Willie she should give me the old formulation of Indy\u2019s pills. I reminded her of how forgetful she is. I explained if she ran out of the new formulation of medication \u2013 the one pill three times a day \u2013 and used an old bottle, she\u2019d dramatically cut Indy\u2019s dose. That\u2019s potentially disastrous in Parkinson\u2019s.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a nurse too!\u201d Willie reminded me.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Again.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cI read the directions before I dispense the medication! That\u2019s basic nursing! I\u2019m not giving you those pills!\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Right.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd explain THIS to me!\u201d She dumped another round of pill bottles in my lap. This time, she was angry because the three pill bottles \u2013 all containing the same drug \u2013 had different directions. The first bottle instructed that the medication be given three times a day. The other bottles said to give it just once a day.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d Willie demanded, the implication clear that I had caused the medication change, mysteriously offending Willie in the process.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWell,\u201d I began, \u201cIndy was supposed to take this medicine three times a day. But you \u2013 the nurse<\/em> \u2013 read the directions wrong and only gave it once a day. The once daily dosing worked, so Indy\u2019s doctors decided to keep it at once a day.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Indy laughed.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Willie made a face. Then she brought me the pill bottles of the old formulation, the ones she told me I wasn\u2019t getting. I could take them from the Temple of Doom.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t like winning that way. Except I kind of liked winning that way.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Taking over the head of the table….<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

Yesterday, I found out Indy has to go back on the pill for his dizziness \u2013 the one he takes in the morning then again in late afternoon. Worse, Willie will have to check his blood pressure regularly for a bit. Worse still, the pill needs to be cut in half.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I\u2019m headed over shortly to tell Indy and Willie.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I might need something stronger than Starbucks.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

If only they\u2019d share their cough syrup.<\/p>\n
