Oh guys. I haven\u2019t forgotten you.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been a bananas summer. Let\u2019s talk about Willie.<\/a><\/p>\n

Willie forgets stuff. I mean, all the time.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

She couldn\u2019t figure out how to renew her driver’s license<\/a>. She forgot that Indy, on occasion, freezes. She forgot that Indy\u2019s freezing bought him a stroke workup.<\/a> She forgot to order the rose gold folders she offered to buy me.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Twice.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What she doesn\u2019t forget is that the lady who runs the cafe at the Temple of Doom<\/a> is mean. And that the lady who left a sacred item in that caf\u00e9 that Indy later mistakenly took is mean. And that she just doesn\u2019t like the deposed ruler<\/a> of Hallway C, Second Floor because she\u2019s bossy.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

So\u2019s the current leader of Hallway C, Second Floor. If you catch my drift.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But those things Willie does forget are concerning. So In April, I had Willie\u2019s doctor perform a test to screen for dementia.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Willie aced it.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I mean, not a single thing wrong. Willie, who forgot that she had me take Indy to the emergency room for an irregular heartbeat<\/a>. Willie, who couldn\u2019t figure out Indy\u2019s home heart monitor despite the three decades she worked as a cardiac nurse. Willie, who looked at a picture of herself at age 56 and explained to me it was a picture of herself when she worked at the bank.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I know that degree was legitimate.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

She worked at the bank when JFK was in office.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Yeah. That Willie. Passed the dementia screening test like she was Nick Foles executing the Philly Special.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Literally the only thing I know about football.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I was stymied. Was she gaslighting me with all these things she supposedly forgot? Did she just not give a flying fig? Was I going crazy?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Don assured me that while yes, Willie has a general disinterest in Indy\u2019s Parkinson\u2019s disease until and unless an interest suits her, she was a good deal more forgetful than she\u2019d been a decade ago.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He also reminded me of the hit her brain took six years ago \u2013 six! \u2013 when she went septic<\/a>. She spent two hours with no readable blood pressure. The only reason she wasn\u2019t declared dead was because she still had a heartbeat.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Which reminded me of another truth: Willie never does anything the easy way.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Now, I\u2019d had many conversations with my aunt and uncle over the years about Willie\u2019s memory being like a Wiffle ball \u2013 rough and full of holes. I stopped questioning my sanity and started texting my siblings.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to talk about Mom,\u201d I texted. \u201cCan I buy you dinner?\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Their responses reassured me even more of my sanity.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cOverdue,\u201d said one.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cCan you meet tomorrow?\u201d asked the other.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

So in short order, we sat huddled around a table at the Pop Inn in Chalfont.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A little aside here \u2013 if you are a sci-fi nerd, your people are waiting for you at the Pop Inn.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Also, the fries are really good.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Anyway, we ordered drinks \u2013 I skipped the Super Soldier Serum in favor of a beer \u2013 and a boatload of fries. As we swapped stories, I realized I indeed needed a bigger boat.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Of fries.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Sorry.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

My brother explained how, after taking Willie home one evening, she told him the next day all about her lovely Uber driver from the night before.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

My sister told me that, despite three conversations confirming plans for her and her kids to swim in the Temple of Doom pool with Willie, Willie still got the date wrong.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

That one I knew about. Willie had invited me after \u201cconfirming\u201d with my sister. My kids and I were all decked out in bathing suits with the proverbial nowhere to go.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We swapped stories for a long time.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cRespectfully,\u201d my brother said, \u201cI think that screening test was useless.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We all agreed.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

So we decided that Willie needed further testing. But who would tell Willie?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Now, my siblings and I are like most siblings \u2013 there\u2019s not a lot we agree on. But we do agree on two things: we love the Preston & Steve Show, and my brother is my mom\u2019s favorite child.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll tell her,\u201d my brother said. \u201cShe\u2019ll take it better from me. She\u2019ll listen to me. You\u2019ll\u201d \u2013 referring to me \u2013 \u201cjust get in trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

That\u2019s the truth. For sure.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I wished him luck and told him to call me when he was done. I would follow up with Willie, then with her doctor.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When the deed was done, my brother called me. That he was still alive was a good sign. I asked if he needed to stop by for a drink after the tongue lashing he had surely received. After all, when I told Willie Indy\u2019s symptoms were clearly Parkinson\u2019s, she told me I was looking for neurological diseases because of my background then canceled his MRI because it interfered with their Phillies tickets.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When I told her to move because the house was too much for her and Indy, she told me the only way I was taking her out was feet first.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When I told her I wasn\u2019t taking her to get her ears pierced because she\u2019d given a scammer<\/a> $2000 and access to her bank account \u2013 something we needed to remedy immediately – she told me I was mean.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

So I fully expected my brother to be licking a few wounds.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cShe took it well,\u201d my brother said. \u201cShe agreed that her memory wasn\u2019t what it used to be. She said a workup was probably a good idea.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

You\u2019ve got to be kidding me.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

She\u2019d given my brother dinner and sent him on his way with promises to call her doctor to get further testing ordered.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Encouraged, I brought up the conversation after Indy\u2019s telehealth appointment the next day. I would go with her to see her doctor. I\u2019d relay to him what my brother and Willie had discussed.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Remember in The Bodyguard<\/em>, when Kevin Costner and Whitney\u2019s security guy get in a fight in Whitney\u2019s kitchen? Remember how Kevin Costner just mops the floor with that guy?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I was that guy.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Never pictured Willie as Kevin Costner but damn can that girl kick some metaphorical ass.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Don’t get her angry. You wouldn’t like her when she’s angry….<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

Willie got so angry with me that Indy got mad at me, and Indy hasn\u2019t been mad at me since I brought home the dude with all the tattoos and piercings.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

She demanded to know what things she\u2019d forgotten because, well, she\u2019d forgotten them. I was wrong. I was a poor clinician. I was controlling.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Well, that last one I agree with. But until the world reliably functions exactly the way I want it to, I\u2019ll need to control a few things.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

On and on Willie went, explaining away all the reasons she needed further testing.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd you know what else?\u201d Willie demanded.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d I asked. I am, not for nothing, Willie\u2019s kid. I may have been panting on the floor while Kevin Costner sat on a chair compressing my trachea, but I wasn\u2019t intimidated. I could withstand this assault all day. But it was getting boring, and I really wanted my Starbucks.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Plus, I had been bingeing the podcast Dirty John<\/em>. The next installment was waiting for me if I could just get to my 4Runner.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cI forget what I was going to say,\u201d Willie huffed.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cImagine that,\u201d I sighed.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Indy laughed.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cCan I go?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cThe sooner the better,\u201d Willie told me.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cCan I use your credit card to buy my Starbucks?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cDo I owe you money?\u201d Willie demanded.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

She did, in fact, owe me money.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cGo ahead,\u201d Willie sighed.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Later, Willie texted me with the thing she forgot.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

She wanted to know A) if she had an iPhone B) Can she put reminders on it and C) If she does have an iPhone, why?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Incidentally, the query about putting reminders on the iPhone came from \u2013 wait for it \u2013 Willie\u2019s memory therapist.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Willie does, in fact, have an iPhone. We\u2019ve discussed this multiple times. I bought it to connect to the Apple Watches I bought for her and Indy. The Apple Watches I bought, in part, to remind Willie and Indy of doctors\u2019 appointments and medication times.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In other words, they\u2019re already programmed with reminders.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But Willie forgot, so she couldn\u2019t tell her memory therapist that.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And why doesn\u2019t Willie\u2019s memory therapist know that she can program Willie\u2019s Alexa, Apple Watch and Samsung Galaxy phone with reminders?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I scheduled Willie for her first round of testing. It\u2019s a CT scan of the head.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Willie demanded that I go with her. She\u2019s claustrophobic, she said. She needs me there to keep her calm.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Because I so clearly keep her calm.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cYou know that the CT scanner is open on both ends, right? It\u2019s like a donut.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter,\u201d Willie said. \u201cI\u2019m claustrophobic.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Ah. In other words, Willie still hasn\u2019t forgiven me. Forcing me to attend the CT scan is my punishment.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Probably should have had my brother schedule it.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n
